The Art for Life studio was created by artist and teacher Jan Ramsey in cooperation with Humboldt County Mental Health Services of California. It began as a day treatment option for adults with persistent mental illness who wanted to work as serious artists. The studio became a safe environment where artists could experiment, work, think and trust each other.
The artists show their paintings as a cooperative studio. Their art strives to give hope and beauty to places of healing, work and rest. Paintings are exhibited and rotated continually in Humboldt County gallery spaces. For details, see the Events page.
In 2014, Art for Life celebrated its twentieth birthday. Then, in 2015, paperwork from the early years came to light and the artists had to celebrate all over again . . . because the studio turned out to be a year younger than everyone had thought.
